The Vittala Temple is the most extravagant architectural showpiece of Hampi, the erstwhile city of Vijayanagar, in Bellary district of Karnataka. The temple is built in the form of a sprawling campus with compound wall and gateway towers.
Vittala, after whom the temple is known, is a form of lord Vishnu, worshiped in this part of the country by the cattle herds as their cult deity.
The temple was originally built in the 15th century AD. The highlight of the Vittala temple is its impressive pillared halls and the stone chariot.
The main hall in front of the Vittala Temple, though partially damaged is still awe inspiring and contains four open halls within. The outermost pillars are popularly called the musical pillars as they emit musical tones when tapped.
