Spituk, also known as Spitok, is famous for its Gompa. The Spituk Gompa stands majestically on top of a hillock overlooking the IndusValley, Situated about 7 kms away from Leh, the Gompa belongs to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhist monasteries. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and it houses an image of Lord Buddha, a rich collection of Thangkas and masks, ancient arms and icons and a sacred idol of Amitayus. You can also see some fine murals in the prayer hall.
The 2 day Gu-Stor festival is held here every year in the month of January. Traditional dances like those of ‘Black Hat Dancers’ who celebrate the end of evil forces are the main attraction of the festival. Spituk can be covered as an excursion from Leh and the drive to Spituk from Leh takes less than 30 mins.
