Sikandra is famous for Akbar's mausoleum. Construction of this beautiful monument was started by Akbar himself but he died before the completion of the tomb .The construction was then completed by his son Jehangir. This three storied red sandstone structure is a fine example of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture.`Along` with Akbar’s Tomb, the tombs of Akbar’s daughters Shakrul Nisha Begum and Aram Bano are also present here.
The white marble inlay work, striking geometric patterns, exquisite paintings and an elaborately decorated vestibule make the mausoleum a popular tourist attraction. There is a huge gateway leading to the gardens. The strikingly bold gateway is adorned with large mosaic patterns. The walled garden enclosure is laid out in the char bagh style with the mausoleum at the center. The structure also has an open terrace surrounded by intricate lattice work screens. Sikandra is highly recommended as a half day excursion for visitors traveling to Agra.
Sikandra is about 5 kms to the west of Agra and easily accessible by road. The drive takes less than half an hour. Buses heading to Mathura pass through Sikandra but hiring an autorickshaw is a more convenient option.
