Situated 108 km from Gwalior, Shivpuri was the summer capital of the Scindia rulers of Gwalior. The ancient town was named after Lord Shiva and Shivpuri's dense forests were the hunting grounds of the Mughal emperors in the Mughal era.
Shivpuri is famous for its marble chhatris (cenotaphs) built by the Scindias. Its royal ambience lives on the exquisite palaces and hunting lodges. While in Shivpuri also visit the MadhavNational Park nearby. The luxuriant forests are home to a large number of animals. The predominant species that inhabits the park is the deer, of which the most easily sighted are the graceful little Chinkara, the Indian gazelle, and the Chital. The artificial lake, Chandpatha, is the winter home of migratory geese, pochard, pintail, teal, mallard and gadwall. Visit the George Castle in the park at sunset. The Castle was built by Jiyaji Rao Scindia and it offers great views of the lake especially at sunset. Also see the MadhavVilasPalace built by the Scindias. The palace is a fine example of colonial architecture.
