Saputara, Gujarat

Introduction

Saputara is a picturesque hill resort perched on a plateau in the Dang district, at the southern tip of Gujarat. Saputara has been developed as a planned hill resort with a range of facilities for recreation like parks, swimming pools, resorts and hotels, boating facilities etc. Saputara also has India’s longest ropeway which is over a kilometer long. This hill station has a pleasant climate all year round with temperatures rarely exceeding 28 deg C.
Saputara means the 'Abode of Serpents' and a snake image on the banks of the river Sarpagana is worshiped by the Adivasis on festivals like Holi.

Saputara is located about 170 kms away from Surat and about 80 ksm away from Nasik and frequent buses and trains are available these towns as well as other nearby places.

What to see:
There are a number of places that you can visit in an around Saputara. A few of them are:

Saputara Lake: Take a boat ride in the lake situated at the core of the picturesque valley.

Valley View Point: Adventure lovers can trek to the Valley View Point to get some picturesque views of the valley.

Sunset Point: Take a 10 minute ropeway ride to get to the Sunset Point. From here you ca get some beautiful views of the sunset and the valley below.

Saputara Museum: The museum has a collection of exhibits including tribal ornaments and musical instruments that give an insight into the culture of the Dang tribes.

 You can also visit the Nageshwar Mahadev Temple, the numerous gardens or make a trip to the Artist Village where you can see the artisans at work and pick up some fine pieces of pottery, jewellery or other handicrafts.

 
While you are in Saputara you can also go one an excursion to:

Vansda National park : Originally, a private forest of maharaja of Vansada, the park now covers on area of 24 km². Despite its small size the park harbours tiger, leopard, pangolin,  python, giant squirrel, four-horned antelope etc. Prior permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden, of Gandhinagar or DFO, Ahwa, is required before visiting the park.

Purna Sanctuary: Covering an area of 160 km², Purna Sanctuary is a part of a dense moist deciduous forest in the Western Ghat of Gujarat. Situated at Mahal, 60 km north of Dangs, the sanctuary is crossed by Purna and Gira rivers. There are bamboo-lined pathways for trekkers. Prior permission is necessary for visiting.
