Pench National Park, Central India

Introduction

Pench is a famous holiday destination for tourists as it is well known for the Pench National Park. Famous as the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, the Pench National Park is the ideal destination for its rich variety of flora and fauna. The forest of Pench has a variety of trees like teak, lendi, haldu and salai to name a few.

Weather And Best Time To Travel:

The climate of Pench is  tropical. While the temperature during  winter ranges between 3º C to 16º C , during  summer the maximum temperature rises to 42º C  and minimum temperature  to 26º C . The best time to visit Pench is from March to June when it is neither too cold nor too hot .

 Currency:

The best option is to exchange currency at Sonegaon Airport, Nagpur.  Very few hotels are able to exchange currency/travellers cheques though one can get a better rate at bigger bank branches.  At Pench, very few shops and establishments would accept Visa and Mastercard

Visa And Travel Permit:

No permits are required to travel to Bhopal other than a visa for India.   

Where To Stay:

For a unique experience consider staying at the Forest Guest House. However it is advisable to make a bookings in advance. 

How To Get There:

By Air
The nearest Airport is the Sonegaon Airport, Nagpur  which is located at a distance of 93 kms from Pench. There are flights which are well connected to the other cities. From Nagpur there are a lot of buses to reach Pench.
By Train
If you are traveling by train then one must take a train to Seoni which is the nearest railhead to reach Pench. The distance between Seoni and Pench is 30 kms.

By Road
One can take a bus from Seoni to reach Pench.  Seoni is well connected by road, raill and air to other important cities.

What To See:

 Pench National Park is situated in Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh in India. It derives its name from the Pench River that flows through the National park from north to south dividing the park into almost equal western and eastern halves- the well forested areas of Chhindwara and Seoni districts respectively. It was declared a sanctuary in 1977 but raised to the status of National park in 1983. Later it was established as Tiger Reserve area in 1992.

Tiger is the main cat species of the park present in good numbers but sighted infrequently. Commonly seen wildlife is chital, sambhar, nilgai, wild boar, and jackal.

Sitaghat : Sitaghat is believed to be one of the most attractive tourist locations in Pench. It is a scenic spot in the Pench National park. This spot is also an ideal spot for wildlife viewing in the evenings. There are blooming trees during summer which adds to the beauty of Sitaghat. It is also a perfect location to see the sunset. Do ensure to carry your binoculars to spot the animals especially the birds.

Alikatta : It can be considered as the center of the Pench National Park. It is from here that the different tracks branch out in different directions. It is a grassland where you could spot a lot of animals. Alikatta is also the starting point for the elephant ride.
 
Bodhanala range
: With a bamboo groves and a pond nearby, the Bodhanala Range is a must visit when at the Pench National Park. It is a good location to spot some animals.

Raiyakassa : This is the watch-tower from where one can get an excellent view of the Pench National Park and also of the Pench Rover. This watch-tower was built by the authorities and also has provisions for tourists who want to stay over and spend a night at Raiyakassa. Spending a night here can be quite a unique and memorable experience and one could spot some animals like Bison or Tiger who come down to the river Pench too.

Doob Road : One of the most beautiful track routes, the Doob Road runs along the water bodies at the National Park and there are great chances of spotting herds of deer or bison .
