Mirik is a low profile hill station close to the Nepal border. This charming little hill station is surrounded by vast expanses of tea estates, orange orchards and lush green pine forests.Mirik is usually off the tourist circuit and is ideal for those looking for a quite retreat in the hills. The climate is pleasant all year round with temperatures of a maximum of 30°C in summer and a minimum of 2°C in winter. The town is centered on the SumenduLake which is encircled by a 3.5 kms long road.
This tranquil hill station is situated about 50 kms away from Darjeeling and Siliguri. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra and the nearest rail head is at New Jalpaiguri. A good network of roads connects Mirik to nearby places like Bagdogra, Siliguri, Kurseong and Darjeeling.
What to see:
The main attraction of Mirik is the SumenduLake, surrounded by a beautiful garden on one side and pine trees on the other, linked together by an arching footbridge. You can also get some spectacular views of the Khangchendzonga from this lake. Boating facilities are also available.
Mirik has several view points like Ramitey Dara, Kawlay Dara and Deosi Dara which offer spectacular views of the eastern Himalayan ranges and the surrounding plains of Mirik.
The SinghaDeviTemple and the Devi Sthan are the popular temples in Mirik that attract a large number of tourists.
A number of tea gardens, producing the famed Darjeeling tea, cardamom plantations and orange orchards are located in and around Mirik.
The Bokar Gompa is a richly painted Gompa situated on the hilltop which gives good views of Mirik.
