Mandawa is a part of the Shekhawati region, located in the Jhunjhunu district and the preferred base for visiting Shekhawati. The little town is known for its imposing fortress, interesting havelis and fine baoris. Founded in the 18th century Mandawa gives the visitor a feel of the bygone era.
The region experiences tropical climate with extremely hot summers and cold winters.Hence the best time to visit Mandawa is between the months of October and March when the temperatures are lower.
The nearest railway station and airport is at Jaipur about 160 kms from Mandawa. Mandawa has good road connections from major cities like Jaipur, Bikaner and Delhi. Buses from these cities as well as nearby towns are easily available. You can also hire a taxi. Tourist attractions:
Castle Mandawa is one of the most important tourist attractions here. This 18th century fortress was built by Nawal Singh and has now been converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. The fortress is adorned with beautiful frescoes, exquisite carvings, mirror work and the walls are adorned with beautiful paintings of Lord Krishna.
The other tourist attractions are the splendid havelis with colourful, painted exteriors. Some of the popular havelis are the: Binsidhar Newatia Haveli, Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli, Murmuria Haveli, Jhunjhunwala Haveli, Mohan Lal Saraf Haveli and the Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli. The havelis were painted using the fresco technique.Their interiors and exteriors have some exquisite carvings on doors and window frames. You can also visit some fine baoris scattered around town.
