Khonoma - a hotbed of Naga nationalist activity is only about 20 km from Kohima, but due to very bad roads, can take more than an hour to get to. This is where the Nagas made a last stand against British subjugation in the late 1800s, and also against the Indian Army over the years. There is a prominent memorial to 46 villagers who have died at the hands of the Indian Army for the cause of Naga nationhood between 1952 and 1992. The village is very interesting and very beautiful. The terraced fields, which produce 20 types of paddy at different elevations, present a beautiful view. The Khonoma gate relates the tragic stories of British infiltration into Naga Hills in 1879.Indians from the mainland are not made to feel too welcome, but foreign visitors do not face trouble.
