Kavaratti, Lakshadweep Islands

Introduction

It is the headquarters of the U.T Administration since 1964. It is best known for its beautiful calm lagoon which is ideal for basking in the sun and water sports. Kayaks, wind surfers and Sail yachts are available on hire. The multicolored underwater life in the lagoons can be viewed through glass-bottomed boats. 

 

How to get there: One can visit Kavaratti by ship in Coral Reef and Taratashi packages offered by Lakshadweep tourism.

 

Permits: Foreign nationals are not allowed on this island. Indian nationals need a permit as required in all others.

 

Where to stay:  Few tourist huts are located near the jetty, one can stay there.

 

What to eat: Food is served in buffet style. The dishes are mostly of the Malabar cuisine with spicy Tuna fish, chicken and sweet potato serving as the favorites.

 

What to see: Marine life exhibits can be seen at the marine aquarium, where one can see small sharks, sea cucumbers, octopuses, schools of fishes and few anemones. The Specimens section holds different types of shells, splendid looking corals and innumerable fishes preserved in glass jars.

 

The Dolphin Dive Centre is very close to the aquarium. It offers various programs by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) for amateurs and professional divers.

 

The Ajara and Jamnath mosques (of the 52 on the island) are known for it’s exquisitely cut wood carvings famous for being carved out of driftwood. It is locate on the southeastern side of the island. The mosque is a 17th century mosque that was built by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim. His grave situated within the mosque making it an important pilgrimage destination for the people of the Kavaratti. Women are not allowed to visit the main prayer hall. A well within their vicinity is believed to have medicinal water.
