Gohar Mahal, Bhopal

Introduction

The Mahal is a magnificent expression of the fusion of Hindu and Mughal architecture, situated behind Shaukat Mahal on the banks of the Upper Lake. It is an architectural gem built by Qudisa Begum, also known as Gohar Begum. It was built in 1820. The Gohar Mahal is a wonderful expression of the fusion of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The walls are well designed, and the miniature architecture is dazzling. Qudisa Begum was the first woman ruler of Bhopal who ascended the throne of the erstwhile princely state in 1819, after her husband died in an accident. From then on, political power rested with the Begums of Bhopal. The Begums were liberal and modern in their outlook, and Qudisa Begum was the probably India’s first liberal Queen.

Although she was illiterate, she was brave and refused to follow the purdah  tradition or the veil. She had declared that her 2 year old daughter Sikander will follow her as the ruler. None of the male family members dared to challenge her decision. She cared very well for her subjects and took her dinners only after receiving the news every night that all her subjects had taken meals. She also built the excellent Jama Masjid and her own beautiful palace - 'Gohar Mahal'. She ruled till 1837. Before her death, she had adequately prepared her daughter for ruling the state.

The Gohar Mahal is a very significant historical building in dilapidated state. On an invitation from the Ministry of Textiles and Madhya Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Vikas Nigam (MPHHVN), INTACH has worked out a restoration and reuse proposal for the complex. To convert it into an Urban Haat, the palace will be restored maintaining the original structure. The archways of the palace still retain a majestic air about them and are well worth a visit.
