Gadisar Lake, Jaisalmer

Introduction

The Gadisar Lake, once the water supply of the city, is surrounded with multitudes of shrines and small temples. The small museum displays folk art here. This used to be the sole source of water for the inhabitants of Jaisalmer and also for the camel caravans. There is a Krishna temple located on a bank of the river and it is a prime location to see the sunset.

Located in the middle of the Thar desert, Jaisalmer is known to be the Golden City. It is here that Gadisar Lake is situated amidst idyllic temple structures. The museum is full of interesting pieces from the past that talk of a bygone era. One can find lot of souvenirs, paintings and other artifacts that are a testimony to the courageous folklore of the Rajputs, the warriors of the Indian soil.

Most of the tourists like to come to Gadisar Lake during the Desert Festival which is held over three days in Jan-Feb every year. This is the best time to visit Jaisalmer to witness many performing arts like Kalbelia dances and folk songs and music. Though Gadisar Lake may seem remote, it is filled with many artistic structures and monuments of local historical importance. It’s serene waters make the Lake a popular tourist destination. Camel safaris through the nearby desert dunes are popular with tourists; competition for business is fierce. A few quiet days spent wandering around the town and the surrounding desert can be a wonderful way of unwinding from the chaos of larger cities and normal daily routine. It is best to visit this place during the Desert Festival in January and February

Visiting Hours:  12noon to 5PM.
