Eastern Group of Temples, Khajuraho

Introduction

Khajuraho temples, constructed with spiral superstructures, adhere to a north Indian shikhara temple style and often to a Panchayatana plan or layout. A few of the temples are dedicated to the Jain pantheon and the rest to Hindu deities -  Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and various Devi forms such as the Devi Jagadambi temple. A Panchayatana temple had four subordinate shrines on four corners and the main shrine in the center of the podium which comprises their base. Khajuraho is a village in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kms southeast of Delhi, the capital city of India. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in India, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples famous for their erotic sculpture. The name Khajuraho is derived from the Hindi word khajur meaning date palm.

The sculptural embellishment and profundity of architectural designs in Temples of Khajuraho is well ostensible in the Eastern Group of Temples. These temples can be subdivided into two groups, one representing some of the finest Jain temples and another scattered through the neighboring village. The Eastern Group of Temples at Khajuraho includes Parsvanath Temple, Adinath Temple, Ghantai Temple, Hanuman temple, and Brhama Temple.

Parsvanath Temple, dedicated to Jain Tirthankara Parshvanatha, is the largest of the Jain temples. Parsvanath Temple is also famous for its beautiful sculptures depicting celestial beauties in several postures. Adinath Temple is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara Adinath. What is truly remarkable of this Jain Temple is its lavish embellishment with sculpted figures, including that of Yakshis. Ghantai Temple is a Jain Temple, famous for its ornamental depiction of 16 dreams of Mahavira's mother and a Jain goddess on a winged Garuda. The three Hindu temples of the Eastern group are the Brahma temple, the Vamana temple, and the Javari temple.
