The famous waterfalls are located just 25 km from Jabalpur. The waterfall is known as Dhuandhar ( 'Dhuan' is the Hindi word for smoke) since the water droplets at the fall go above in concentrated mass and create illusion of vapours. As the name suggests, the water gushes with a such a force that the name Dhuandhar meaning with big force, has been attached to it.
The magnificent waterfalls are formed out of the sacred Narmada River. The Narmada River is considered extremely holy by Hindus. The Dhuandar waterfalls look majestic in broad daylight and during the monsoons, the waterfalls are ferocious. The flow of Narmada River around this area is extremely captivating. In some places like the marble rocks of Bhedaghat, River Narmada silently makes its way through. And here in Dhuandar, the River looks violent, with gushing sounds of water. These cliffs made of pure white limestone shine so bright in the sun that they seem to be that of Marble. The colors change according to the fall of sun rays. It is a splendid sight on the night of full moon. The boat men take the tourists right in the middle of the great gorge to watch the splendid beauty of nature. The River Narmada which meanders peacefully through these rocks takes a deep plunge down giving a magnificent view of the Dhuandhar waterfalls.
The Hindi word Dhuandhar or roaring signifies the splendor of the place. The Narmada plunges down the high marble hills creating misty or smoky water falls. The gargantuan amount of water falling from such heights generates a roar which can be heard miles away and succinctly named the Roaring Falls.
This ancient city like any other Indian city has numerous temples but a few which have been constructed on top of the hills and present a magnificent view of the Narmada are Chausat Yogini Temple, Tripuri Sundari Temple and Vishnu Barha Temple. The Chausat Yogini Mandir a Goddess Durga temple was constructed in the 10th century. The exquisite stone carvings of the era are a testimony to the high craftsmanship of the people of Jabalpur.
The city of Jabalpur is ideally located for visiting the two nature parks, the Kanha and Bhandavgarh National Parks. A drive of just about 2 to 3 hours from Jabalpur would get you into the lap of a perfectly wild and raw nature.
