Bharuch today is a large seaport city in the state of Gujarat. Bharuch was once but a small village on the banks of the NarmadaRiver but due to the river’s inland access to central and northern India, the village grew and prospered as a trading transshipment center and ship building port.
What to see: The BhriguRishiTemple, which is one of the most sacred temples in Gujarat, attracts a large number of pilgrims. The temple is dedicated to Maharishi Brighu from which the city took its name. Bharuch Fort (Lallubhai Haveli) was built in 1791 AD. The hilltop fort gives views of the Narmada river and the façade of the fort has some fine wooden carvings. The Jama Masjid is a situated at the base of the fort. The 150-year-old GoldenBridge connects Bharuch to Ankleshwar across the NarmadaRiver. The crowded but fascinating bazaar of Bharuch Swaminarayan Mandir lies on the NH-8 and is fast becoming a significant attraction for visitors to Bharuch.
Excursions from Bharuch: Kabirvad is an island on the Narmada river which is famed for the banyan tree where Kabirdas is said to have meditated. The gigantic tree covers an area of over 3 acres. The lotus shaped marble temple, Kabir museum and boat ride on Narmada river are other attractions here.
Also visit the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary which aims to protect the Sloth Bear and the holy village of Shuklatirth near Bharuch.
