Amber Fort is located in the town of Amber, about 11 km from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The Meenas were the original builders of Amber which they consecrated to Amba, the Mother Goddess whom they knew as `Gatta Rani' or `Queen of the Pass'. Built over the remnants of an earlier structure, the palace complex which stands to this date was commenced under the reign of Raja Man Singh, the Commander-in-Chief of Akbar’s army and a member of the Emperor's inner circle of nine courtiers in 1592.
The Amber Fort used to be a palace complex within the original fort of Amber which is today known as Jaigarh Fort. Connected with Amber through fortified passages Jaigarh fort is located on a hill above the Amber complex and is constructed of red sandstone and white marble. It overlooks Maotha Lake and was reputed to be the treasure vault of the Kacchwaha rulers. Today, tourists can ride up to the fort from the base of the hill on an Elephant. On the ride, one can see the beautiful sights of Jaipur, a great view of Maotha Lake, and the original ancient city walls.
The most magnificent sight of all is the Hall of Mirrors. When royalty lived there and at night, when they had to come through and needed lighting, they would take a single candle and because of all of the tiny intricate mirrors, the entire room would light up.
The Amber Fort set in picturesque and rugged hills is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. In the background is the breath taking view of the Maota Lake. Built mainly for the warring enemies as a safe place, the heavily structured walls could defend the residents within the ramparts of the fort.
Amber Fort vibrates with its legendry past, and the archaeological history. Although many of the early structures have been literally ruined but at the same time, those dating from the 16th century on are remarkably preserved by sincere efforts. The easiest way to get there is to drive from Jaipur [11 kms.]
